We needed to move on to the east to get to the next set of battle sites but couldn't resist a small diversion into the national park Serra da Estrela. We discovered a super camp site Quinta das Cegonhas (storks!) near Gouveia, a drive of just 100k (see picture right). An opportunity to erect the flagpole and fly our national flags for the first time on the latest phase.
The site was run by a Dutch couple who had moved there from Holland in 1995 and gradually improved the facilities to its current state. Everything was immaculate on a smallish terraced piece of ground with stunning views into the Mondego valley and with the Estrela behind. Much to our pleasure, they provided all the things that by not being provided in other sites had caused irritation eg loo seats, lighting in all facilities,wi-fi access, hot water everywhere and showers that didn't turn themselves off every 10 seconds or so! Reijke and Gerard were warm hosts and gave every assistance including maps and directions for a reasonably strenuous two hour walk up to the Gravinho and down through Melo village. Unfortunately. we didn't spot Maria's Taverna so went back to the van for a scrumptious salade nicoise with Bonito tuna - the best we have had. Muscles a bit sore after the walk - quite a different set in use.
